Papers, 1835-1940, bulk: 1861-1899.

Primarily the papers of Robert B. Brown containing items related to his Civil War career as an officer in the Mass. 2nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment, including his commission and list of officers with the portion of their pay to be sent home, and particularly orders sent to him as an assistant quartermaster on the staff of Nathaniel Banks in the spring of 1862. The majority of his papers, however, relate to his business interests as owner of the Robert B. Brown Oil Co. (St. Louis, Mo.), the Occidental Oil Company (New York, N.Y.), both of which specialized in the sale of castor and linseed oils; as a partner of the Mitchell-Allen Soap Co.; and as an investor in several mining operations in Colombia (many of these items in Spanish). The business papers contain financial accounts, correspondence, and legal agreements. His correspondents include B.S. Hobbs and Henry Hallam. His papers also include a planting diary containing soil analyses (1878-80). (Cont'd) Other Brown family papers include a letter from Robert B. Brown's father, Robert, to his wife Mary C. Brown written while at sea on a whaling voyage (1841) and one from Mary to her husband. A letter from Bancroft Brown, Robert B.'s son, describes life at the Presidio in San Fransico in 1899 prior to his departure for the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. The collection also includes genealogical and biographical information on the Brown, Gregory, Cleveland, Roundy, and other related families.
